Myasthenia Gravis Awareness month or MG awareness month is coming up in June. This awareness month was created by the Myasthenia Gravis foundation of America Incorporated in an effort to raise awareness about this commonly misdiagnosed disease.

Myasthenia Gravis is a disease that can target people of all ages, genders, races and more. While there are some treatments available that can work to improve the quality of life and muscle strength there is unfortunately no cure for this disease as of yet.

This disease is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that affects the condition of our voluntary muscles. Some of the first muscles and symptoms that you might notice reside in the eye movements and eyelids and as the disease progresses individuals might have difficulty performing facial expressions, arm and leg movements, breathing, swallowing and more.

Roughly 70,000 people are affected by MG in the United States alone and many believe that this number is much higher if we include all of the misdiagnosed cases and undiagnosed cases. Myasthenia Gravis is generally thought to be a rare disease and because of its rarity it’s quite often under diagnosed because the same symptoms are prevalent in many other disorders.

During Myasthenia Gravis awareness month this June medical professionals and organizations around the world will be working to raise funds for research to find a cure as well as providing education on the symptoms and causes of this rare disease. It is hoped that with proper awareness and funding together we can find better treatment options to improve the quality of life of those who are affected by this disease while working towards a cure.
