Medical Awareness

Medical Awareness

The use of awareness ribbons started back in the 1970s when our troops were headed off to war as a way to commemorate the thoughts and prayers of a nation. The song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” was used as a literal and figurative way to signify support for troops and hostages in a positive way. Though there have been many changes in the way we show support since that simpler time, the concept is still the same.

Whether we loudly proclaim our support, or quietly make a statement about our beliefs, awareness ribbons give us a way to show others what is most important in our life. However, it wasn’t until the Red Ribbon awareness during the AIDS epidemic in 1992 and then the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and their pink ribbon flooded the market that people really caught on to the use of physical awareness ribbons in any meaningful way. As ribbons continued to gain popularity through the early 2000s, ribbon accessories came to the forefront, primarily for use in fundraising and awareness campaigns: tattoos, mini ribbons, bumper stickers, promotional campaigns, posters, bracelets, pins, key chains and more.
