Thanksgiving day (27th November) is just around the corner and the celebrations have already begun in full swing. Despite the recent snowfall playing a spoilsport in the ongoing thanksgiving day preparations, the thanksgiving spirit seems far from dampened.
As you all know, thanksgiving is the day when people get together with their families and friends and become thankful for all of life’s blessings, not to mention the delicious food, but most importantly, it marks the onset of the holiday season. Yay!
When did it all start?
The concept of thanksgiving in America can be traced back to as far as 1621, when a feast was held at Plymouth Plantation by the early English settlers to celebrate a successful harvest season. As the years progressed Americans began to celebrate Thanksgiving as a religious observance. It wasn’t until in 1863 that, the then president of the USA, Abraham Lincoln, declared the fourth Thursday of every November as the national holiday of thanksgiving.
Although after the American Civil War, thanksgiving was observed to honour the civil traditions, nowadays people prefer to spend this national day with families and friends and bond over delicious thanksgiving dinners , watch a football game or visit the local parade.
The Feast
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Thanksgiving? The Thanksgiving feast no doubt. And It’s impossible to imagine a thanksgiving feast without the traditional thanksgiving turkey. This succulent, tender bird is mostly accompanied by the customary fresh cranberry sauce, a dish of creamy mashed potatoes, crunchy green beans, fluffy homemade bread rolls and last but not the least, freshly baked pie, preferably pumpkin, to finish your meal on a sweet note.
In the end, what makes a thanksgiving dinner doubly special is enjoying this fabulous meal while being surrounded by your loved ones in your cozy home. I will be spending my thanksgiving with none other than my beloved shop dog Burton(my life’s blessing), and hopefully this year I might succeed in keeping him from drooling all over my mom’s pumpkin pie.
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
