  • A Batch of Healthy: National Baking Week
    Added by My Identity Doctor
We may be halfway through the month of Halloween, but it’s also National Baking Week—and no, it’s not just for the Food Network!
The great thing about baking is that it’s an activity the whole family can do together, or can be done with a friend and the results shared! Baking also allows you to have more control over the ingredients in your food, and make substitutions where needed for allergies, intolerances and sensitivities, special diets, and plain old preference! After all, when was the last time a store-bought chocolate chip cookie was as delicious as one that was fresh out of the oven?

This week, we’ve pulled together a list of sources for healthy recipes to help you bake up some deliciousness that fits your needs and the needs of your family. While healthier baking doesn’t necessarily mean it’s as healthy as grabbing a piece of fruit, it does mean you can feel like you’re having a treat… without feeling like your over-indulging or weighed-down like you might following a decadent dessert at a restaurant!

Healthy Recipes: Your Source for Goodness
Here are some websites where you can find great, healthy (or healthier!) recipes:
    • Greatist
If you follow us on Twitter, you know I have an affinity for Greatist! Greatist archives great, healthy recipes (that are usually easy to make!) of all kinds, from baking to making weekly meal-prep easy. From the seasonally appropriate “9 Pumpkin Spice Products That Aren’t Packed with Garbage” to “21 Gluten-Free Cupcakes You’ll Lick Off The Wrapper“, Greatist has a ton of great baking ideas that will fit into your lifestyle (and are usually pretty quick, too).
    • Chocolate Covered Katie
Known as “The Healthy Dessert Blog”, CCK is the go-to for healthy desserts. While the vegan recipes are often a bit more complex and may include ingredients you don’t always have on hand, Chocolate Covered Katie will inspire you to make healthier twists on your favourites, often with gluten free or other dietary friendly substitutions.
    • Food Network
Not just great for watching marathon spectacles of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for 2 days straight, the Food Network also boasts an elaborate collection of recipes, including the Healthy Cooking Everyday sub-site Healthy Dessert Ideas. Cheesecake, brownies, fruit based treats and more, bake up a storm with healthier recipes!
    Recipes by Dietary Need
If you live with a medical condition like diabetes or celiac disease or a food allergy, there are lots of websites that help you zero in on recipes that are built for keeping foods low-carb (in the case of diabetes), gluten free (for celiac disease), or allergy friendly. These recipes may not be healthy dessert recipes but will help you stay within the parameters of your dietary needs.
    A selection include:
    • Diabetic Living this selection of diabetes-friendly recipes can help you transition into lower-carbohydrate baking.
      • Low sugar, real ingredients? If you are trying to cut back on sugar or have diabetes and are trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners check out this collection of 7 Dessert Recipes with Zero Added Sugar from Greatist.
    • Allergic Living features recipes free of top-8+ allergens and gluten, making this site a good choice if you have a group coming together with several dietary needs!
    • While gluten free recipe resources are coming more abundant, if you’re not into hardcore baking, check out Gluten Free on a Shoestring’s list of 13 No Bake Gluten Free Dessert Bars!
Staying safe with food allergies or Celiac disease, or having a bit more control with diabetes can include baking your own treats, as well as wearing a medical ID bracelet, whether you’re eating out or laying back at home.
Where do you go to find special recipes that are workable with your medical condition, allergies or intolerances? Let us know in the comments or on social media—we’re on Twitter at @MyIDentityDoc and Facebook at My IDentity Doctor!
